Completing the FAFSA is the key step to receive aid to continue your education after graduating from high school or obtaining a GED. It is also required for many scholarship applications.

College Goal Colorado is February 8th

Show Your Colors In Colorado

In honor of International Education Week (November 17-21), StudyColorado is hosting a photo contest. We encourage international students to show their colors in Colorado. We want to see you displaying your flag or wearing national dress while enjoying a favorite spot in Colorado.

Enter the StudyColorado photo contest by noon on November 12th for a chance to win a gift card (Visa gift card, coffee shops and more!). Winners will be announced daily Monday, November 17th through Friday, November 21st.

ASSET (SB13-033) Passed and Signed

In March 2013 the Colorado General Assembly passed Senate Bill 13-033, often referred to as the Colorado ASSET legislation. A student (other than a non-immigrant alien) who meets the below criteria is eligible for in-state
tuition classification. This includes U.S. citizens, permanent resident aliens, and students without lawful immigration status.

Specific criteria to qualify for in-state tuition classification under ASSET include:

  • Enrolled for at least three years at a public/private Colorado high school immediately preceding graduation or earning a GED;
  • Admission into Colorado institution of higher education/attends a reciprocal program within 12 months of high school graduation or earning a GED;
  • Students without lawful immigration status are required to submit an affidavit (one time on the COF website or paper application) stating that the student has applied for lawful presence or will apply as soon as he or she is eligible to do so;

Students who graduated from a Colorado high school or completed GED prior to September 1, 2013 and were not admitted into college within 12 months but meet ALL other eligibility criteria may qualify for in-state tuition by providing documentation to the school proving that the student has been physically present in Colorado for eighteen months prior to enrolling.

National College Fair is October 18th

The free Denver National College Fair (En Español) will be at the Colorado Convention Center on Saturday, October 18, 2014 from 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. This is a great opportunity for high school students to meet with college representatives from more than 250 colleges across the United States and attend informative workshops. Shopping Sheet Launched

The U.S. Department of Education recently created a model financial aid award letter format known as the "Shopping Sheet." Students may complete this sheet for each college from which they receive an award letter. Students and parents can then more easily compare the financial aid package offered by each college.

The CollegeInvest Matching Grant Program is one more reason to feel good about living in Colorado! Designed to help lower- to middle-income Colorado families save money for higher education, this program can provide eligible account holders with matching funds - up to $500 each year for up to five years - when they open a CollegeInvest 529 College Savings Account. Apply by December 31, 2013.

CollegeInvest 529 Scholarship

The application period for the 2013-2014 CollegeInvest 529 ScholarshipNew window icon is now open. The scholarship will be awarded to Colorado residents from low- to middle-income families who have planned for higher education by saving through a CollegeInvest 529 College Savings Plan. Each eligible student will be awarded $2,000 for the 2013-2014 school year, renewable each year they continue to be eligible, up to 4 years. Review eligibility requirements and apply by July 31, 2013.

Counselor Corps Loan Forgiveness Program

The application period is now open for the Colorado's School Counselor Corps Loan Forgiveness Program. Participants selected for the Program may be eligible for loan forgiveness benefits of up to $2,000 per year for up to two academic years of consecutive eligible employment regardless of the lender.

The Counselor Corps Loan Forgiveness Program is intended for full-time, licensed, professional counselors in Counselor Corps grantee schools, serving students between grades 7 through 12, and having worked a minimum of one full academic year in this position. STEM Shout Out Scholarships

Math and science aren't boring school subjects and can bring anexciting career to your future! IBM, 850KOA and College In Colorado awarded three STEM Shout Out Scholarships ($1000, $750 and $500) to creative students. Winning entries of a radio or TV commercial told peers about a cool STEM career and how CollegeInColorado.org was used to plan for the future. Watch here for winner information!

Earning college credits while still in high school is a great way for students to get a head start. Through the DeVry University Passport2College Program, high school juniors and seniors get the opportunity to test-drive college by earning college credits tuition free.

CU Guarantees Admission to Community College and Transfer Students

The University of ColoradoNew window icon guarantees admission to community college students with 30 hours and 2.7 GPA, starting next spring. In addition, transfer students who meet certain requirements are guaranteed admission to the College of Arts and Sciences at CU-Boulder.

Congratulations to the Belly Flop Splashdown Winners!

College In Colorado teamed up with Water World and 92.5 The Wolf on June 23, 2011 for the Belly Flop Splashdown. Students from across the state entered for a chance to win a scholarship. The top three male and top three female belly floppers received a $1,000, $750 and $500 college scholarship.

Throughout the morning participants made an initial jump off a low platform, and were judged based on performance and entertainment value. The top five contestants advanced to the higher platform for finals, with one flopper earning the title of Best Belly Flopper, and six students walking away with money for college. Focus on Current Events

Have you noticed our new Explore Careers IMPACT "micro-site" (a small Website within the larger) that focuses on current events? So far we've shown you careers and college programs of study related to working a natural disaster such as in Haiti and the World Cup. The Gulf Coast oil spill is the current topic.

Colorado Ranks 3rd

Colorado ranks third in the nation in terms of proportion of its jobs that will require a Bachelor's degree by 2018. Between 2008 and 2010, Colorado will create 924,000 job vacancies from new jobs and retirement. 609,000 of these vacancies will be for those with postsecondary credentials, only 220,000 for high school graduates and 94,000 for high school dropouts. Counseling Center Makeover Completed

During the 2009-2010 school year, College In Colorado sponsored a counseling center makeover contest, worth over $3,000, for Colorado middle and high schools. College In Colorado unveiled the results of the makeover at York International School in Mapleton School District on August 17, 2010. York International has a population of 64% Latino and over 68% of students receiving free and reduced lunch. The staff at College In Colorado worked closely with York International's counselor and students to ensure the new area would meet the needs of their students so they may prepare for their future college and career aspirations. The makeover included new paint for the room, tables, chairs, posters with quotes chosen by the students, couches, and much more.

What's it like to work the Olympic Games?

Join Don Phillips, vice president of product strategy at Xap Corporation, as he takes a month-long break from designing Websites, such as CollegeInColorado.org, to volunteer at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Games. One of 23,000 volunteers, Don is bloggingNew window icon about this experience of a lifetime.

Don is working with the Venue Management Team responsible for all activities at all the Olympic venues. He is assigned to the Venue Communications Centre at BC Place Stadium, the venue for the opening and closing ceremonies as well as the nightly Victory Ceremony for Vancouver-based competitions.

Attend this free, one-day event to receive professional assistance while completing the FAFSA is the key Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) . The FAFSA is the first step and a federal requirement for all college students who plan to pay for college with the help of grants, work study funds, student loans and many scholarships. Each location in Colorado will also award a scholarship that day. College Goal Sunday is February 20 and 21, 2010.
