Dear Faith: My parents want
me to attend their college alma mater, but I like a different
school. How do I get them to accept my choice?
Faith says: Have you taken the time to discuss
with your parents why you prefer your choice for college over their
alma mater? If not, take the time and explain your reasons. When
you talk with them, be sure you listen and try to understand their
feelings for choosing their alma mater for you. It's important to
hear their opinions.
Try and put them at ease by pointing out the high points
and benefits of the school you've chosen. If they understand that
it was not a quick or rebellious decision on your part, and that
much thought and research was involved in your decision, they are
more likely to agree.
Ultimately, the final decision will require
