If reducing college costs is vital to your family, here are some options that you may want to consider:
Take advantage of Advanced Placement classes and tests while in high school. Most colleges will give students credit for what they have already done, and many will allow for advanced class standing if a significant amount of college-level work has been completed. Fewer years of college cost less!
If a summer session is offered by the college, consider taking advantage of it. In addition to reducing the number of years of tuition payments, qualified students can actually work part-time on campus while attending summer classes, earning money through the Federal College Work-Study Program.
College is a great time for exploration. Many colleges provide wonderful opportunities for students to expand their horizons and gain more information about proposed careers through participation in international study programs.
Don't automatically assume such programs will be out of reach financially. This is rarely the case! Most schools offering these opportunities try to make them available to all students, by allowing students to keep their financial aid and apply it to the study program or by providing special scholarships. Be sure to find out what policies apply at the schools you are considering.
