Different colleges treat outside scholarships differently. At some colleges, the institutional grant will be reduced by the amount of the outside scholarship. On the other hand, some colleges allow a certain amount to go first against any suggested loans; then, if the outside scholarship is greater than that amount, it will reduce institutional grants and loans by the difference. Be sure to find out how outside scholarships will be treated by each college in their financial aid award package.
